All together in the Oranjerie!
The Oranjerie [orangery] is located across the road from Golden Tulip Tjaarda Oranjewoud. A location which is very suitable for family or company parties up to approx. 80 guests. The Oranjerie has various buffet suggestions, including a bread buffet and a barbecue and grill buffet. A lot is possible in consultation. Children also have a great time at the Oranjerie, because there is a playground right next door.
A little history
Willem Tjaarda built the first playground opposite the hotel in 1891 and his son Andreas (1882-1981) also meant a lot for visitors to Oranjewoud. The choice of location proved very fortuitous thanks to the crossroads of beautiful lanes opposite the hotel. From 1903 onwards, the Tjaarda lodging house a new playground was built including slides, an early version of the cakewalk, a chain bridge across the water and roundabouts.
Andreas Tjaarda travelled the world from Athens to Cairo. He returned full of ideas. For example, in 1917, a short distance from the hotel, he had a wooden vantage point or 'belvédère' built in Tjaarda’s woods. The tower was replaced in 1924 due to dilapidation by a 20 metre concrete one on a 10 metre high earthen hillock. There was also a 'cave' near the 'belvédère' to amuse day trippers.
From tea house to 'de Oranjerie'
'De Oranjerie' tea house was built on the site of the tea room opposite the hotel. Since the remodelling in 1998, you can barbecue indoors there. Separate spaces can also be created using the flexible partitioning. In the meantime, de Oranjerie has undergone another minor upgrade. It is now a self-service restaurant and the patio has been expanded towards the playground. This allows guests to have a nice cup of coffee and keep an eye on the kids at the same time.
The playground, then and now
The playground has never stayed the same for long. Although it started out as a tea room and a pond, it was soon expanded to include slides, a chain bridge, a maze, a house of mirrors and an early version of the cakewalk. Over the years, many attractions were replaced by others. This was also the case last year. The climbing frame, merry go-round and rotating swing were replaced by safer playground equipment such as spinning barrels, a see-saw, swings and a spring rider. The carousel and the house of mirrors were retained. The main reason for the changes was safety. An increasing number of young children come to play and they need different playground equipment. An added advantage of the changes was that this enabled us to put in a path from the car park to the hotel which makes everything even more accessible.
